Offering Outdoor, In-person classes for Fall

“Moving together, dancing together with other people, getting a sense of rhythm, drumming together, singing together, making music — helps to reestablish that sense of community and being in sync with the people around you.” This quote from Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, shows us the value of taking a music class with your children. 

This fall we have the opportunity to come back together to sing and move and make music together with our children. 

Let’s Play! Music Together in Eagan, is offering outdoor classes that will get your toes tapping and your children singing along. Let’s Play! Music Together has been offering Music Together® classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and “the adults who love them” in Eagan since 2010, and Rhythm Kids® classes for children ages 4-8 since early 2019. This year, in order to abide by best practices for classes, we will take those classes outside! (indoor distanced space available in case of bad weather or cold) Fall Session classes begin on September 21. Music Together Online and Rhythm Kids Online are still available too.

Music Together and Rhythm Kids classes support child development across all areas of learning. Social, spatial, fine and gross motor development as well as pre-reading and math skills are all enhanced with exposure to music. Dr. Van der Kolk goes on to say that early childhood teachers “don’t do a lot of talking, they do a lot of singing together, and a lot of moving together, a lot of things that help you get in tune and in rhythm with each other. . . Moving together with other kids, dancing together with other kids, playing with other kids, exploring the world with other kids, is so at the core of what creates a healthy mind and a healthy brain.”  

The Music Together Family Class designed for children from Birth to age 5 allows all children to embrace, enjoy, and express their inborn musicality. In your weekly class, you will spend forty-five music-filled minutes singing, dancing, and playing with your child. You’ll learn how your child is developing musically and how you can support this growth at home. 

In the Rhythm Kids program, children ages 4-8 will experience and participate in singing, drumming, dancing and conducting.  Classes naturally support children’s rhythm development and help them prepare for formal music lessons. Children play dynamic musical games, work in ensembles, explore solo singing and drumming, and experiment with improvisation and conducting.

Cheryl Hornstein, Center Director of Eagan’s Let’s Play! Music Together said, “When you think of music as a basic life skill, it becomes clear that it is also one of the most integrated life skills there is.  We use our voices, our emotions, language, spatial reasoning and motor skills. Music is so integrated into what we are as human beings, it is important to provide music experiences, starting as early as possible. I have so many tools to educate local parents about how to create a musical home life for their children. These classes are like no other program in Eagan, and I am proud to serve the community and help parents and their young children bond through music and movement.”
