This magical, unforgettable, family-friendly experience will be awe-inspiring.

October 25, 2022

Ice Castles is an awe-inspiring, must-see winter phenomenon that brings fairy tales to life. The frozen attraction is located in six cities across North America. The experience is built entirely by hand using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains.

Each hand-build castle takes thousands of man hours to create. The daily process consists of growing 5,000-12,000 icicles that are harvested by hand and individually sculpted into existing ice formations. The blend of icicle placement, temperatures, water volume, and wind result in an ever-changing variety of ice formations.

The immersive structures are made entirely from ice. Each castle is approximately 1 acre in size and consists of more than 25 million pounds. All Ice Castles sites are located next to a natural water source so the water returns to the environment each spring to be used again by wildlife, people, and plants.

The experience features frozen towers, caverns, ice slides, crawl spaces, and ice-carved thrones and tunnels. LED lights frozen inside the ice light up and change color at night. Opening dates are weather dependent. Most locations open in early January and remain open until early March.

New this season at Ice Castles in Minnesota:

  • We will debut a new ice bar serving a selection of adult beverages.
  • All guests can participate in our Castle Quest - An immersive, escape-room style scavenger hunt within the attraction.
  • Enhanced lighting features in the light walk and throughout the experience.
  • Whimsical winter characters will be at Ice Castles each day for meet and greets with guests.
  • Of course, we will have a new design and castle layout this year, as well, with ice slides, crawl spaces, and caverns to explore, plus world-class ice sculptures carved by local artists.

* Features are weather dependent, and may be temporarily closed or unavailable due to weather.

Company Background

Ice Castles was founded by Brent Christensen, a Utah father of six who was looking for ways for his family to enjoy the outdoors together, even in winter. He created an ice cave in the front yard of their home, which ultimately brought out more than just his own children. Ice Castles is now an internationally renowned experience with six locations in cities across the United States and Canada and growing.
