June 22, 2022

Karah Piepkorn is a Minnesota mom, living with Multiple Sclerosis, and a first time children’s book author.

Fixing My Crown was inspired by Karah’s daughter, Charlotte, and is the first book featuring a female child wearing a helmet for cranial therapy. This book, authored by Karah Piepkorn and co-illustrated by Karah Piepkorn and Lisa Geggie, is designed to show families the process of getting a helmet for cranial correction and remove the stigma.

If you buy books for kids that teach about inclusion, add this one to your list.

“My MS took something huge away from me, the sensation in my hands. I used to draw and paint, but my MS was affecting how my hands worked and communication with my brain. For a long time, I stopped drawing. After a few years and having a daughter of my own, I decided to give digital illustrations a try and be a strong rolemodel for my daughter to not let anything stop her from doing what she loves someday. With the help of stabilization features in modern digital art tools, and a co-illustrator to do the finer details, I have successfully published a book all about inclusion and strength. Although the story is centered around helmet babies, there are notes of MS awareness throughout the story as well.” – Karah Piepkorn

Karah hopes to reach helmet families and provide some comfort that they are not alone in this unique journey and normalize inclusion for all. Helmet baby or not, representation matters!

“When Charlotte got to see the book for the first time, it was magic. She studied the illustrations, and it was like she knew it was her in that book. She could literally see herself in a book, rocking her helmet, for the first time.” – Karah Piepkorn

What people are saying about Fixing My Crown:
• “Many times my kids and I have been out and about and have seen kids with cranial therapy helmets. My kids would ask why they wore them. Well now there is a book to help talk about why kids wear them that can help with that conversation. If you buy books for kids that teach about inclusion, add this one to your list.”
• “This is amazing! Obviously, a difficult topic and kids need these kinds of stories!”
• “A super sweet book for everyone with a little child, helmet wearer or not. It’s a great book to read to your little one; the illustrations grab baby’s attention, and the story is fun and inspires.”
• “This is an important read for so many families.”
• “Great book for a difficult treatment. Helpful for older siblings that might be fearful of the cranial cap. Illustrations are bright and colorful! The book details the cranial cap experience in a lighter manner. Highlights the many people that wear helmets daily and the positive impact that they have in the community.”
